THE rankings
AUT features in new rankings released today by the Times Higher Education.

The 2018 Times Higher Education (THE) subject rankings released today show AUT featuring strongly in two of its subject areas; clinical, pre-clinical and health, and the life sciences categories.

AUT is ranked in the #101-125 band in the clinical, pre-clinical and health subject ranking. This ranking places AUT second equal in New Zealand behind only the University of Auckland. In THE's life sciences subject ranking, which includes sport and recreation, AUT features in the #301-400 band.

To determine its rankings, THE judges world-class universities across all of their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. International co-authorship of research, and the percentage of international staff and students at AUT, were areas in which the university did particularly well, for both of the ranked subjects. Research citation impact was also an area of strength that contributed to AUT's high position in the clinical, pre-clinical and health subject ranking.

THE recently extended its subjects rankings to include up to 500 universities for some subjects, and this is the first time AUT has appeared in THE's subject rankings. THE began releasing its 2018 subject rankings last month, and today published results for clinical, pre-clinical and health, and life sciences.

AUT has consistently performed well in clinical, pre-clinical and health, and life sciences categories in other international rankings, each of which has its own methods for grouping and measuring subjects. In the 2017 US News Global University Rankings, AUT received subject rankings in social sciences and public health, and clinical medicine. AUT's School of Sport and Recreation was the top-ranked sport science school in New Zealand, and in the top 100 in the world in the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities, which also awarded AUT subject rankings in public health and clinical medicine.
