Players from the Northern Mystics Netball Team, AUT University (AUT) sport and recreation lecturers and students recently took part in a schools netball clinic organised by AUT’s South Campus.

The event brought together 50 Year 12 and 13 students from high schools in the Manukau region, including Botany Downs Secondary College, Howick College, Papatoetoe High School, and Auckland Girls Grammar School, and took them through a number of sessions which covered attacking and defending skills, performance analysis and conditioning.

AUT Senior Lecturer - Sport and Rec Programmes, Kirsten Spencer says the clinic showed students that sport and recreation studies involves both practical and theory-based learning.

“It gave the students a real insight into what studying the Bachelor of Sport and Recreation here at AUT’s South Campus is all about– an understanding of how we can improve performance through sports analysis, sports coaching, a sports management, sports nutrition, sports science and much more.”

Jayne Mayerhofler, Operations and Project Manager – AUT South Campus, hails the clinic a success.

“It was good to see so many students excited about the opportunities available to them, and show them what our campus has to offer.”

Dee Leggat, Northern Mystics Team Manager adds that a number of Mystics players have taken advantage of the courses on offer, while at the same time competing professionally.

Mystics Netballer and AUT Business student Erikana Pedersen says she thoroughly enjoyed the sessions.

“I thought that the students showed a lot of potential in their netball skills. It was awesome to see AUT’s South Campus organise this for South Auckland schools and show them what sport and rec is all about.”
